CEBU, Philippines - Everyone can become modern heroes by self-sacrifice in fulfilling one’s duties and living up to one’s conviction.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes issued this challenge in his message delivered yesterday morning as the city paid tribute to Jose Rizal’s contribution to Philippine national and independence, which also marked the commemoration of his execution by Spanish soldiers at Bagumbayan in 1896.

“There is a need for paradigm shift, ang maayo padayonon ang sayop usbon… we need the cooperation of everyone in the fulfilment of our vision for Mandaue,” Cortes said.

Cortes said this is one way of showing our gratitude to the countless sacrifices of our heroes wherein “we enjoy today the fruits.”

Earlier, a group of teachers and students performed a stage play wherein they re-enacted the important events that led to the execution of Rizal and the present calamities that hit the country. The play featured at the end the resiliency of the Filipinos amidst the difficulties.

“It’s inspiring.. we have to die from our weaknesses and unite for our country,” said Rosalina Gonzales, principal of Subangdaku Elementary School which also participated in the stage play.

Johnnie Cadelina, a teacher of Tipolo Elementary School who performed the role of Jose Rizal said the performance helped him internalize the country’s history and the ideals of our heroes.

City hall employees led by Cortes and other city officials attended a 6:30 am Mass at the National Shrine of St. Joseph followed by a floral offering and a brief program at the city hall grounds.  (FREEMAN)
