Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Public school teachers numbering 1,900 and 200 non-teaching staff of the Department of Education in Mandaue City will start to receive their Productivity Enhancement Incentives (PEI) of P5,000.

And in recognition of their work in helping shape children, Mayor Jonas Cortes said the city government will give an additional P2,500.

“Isip pasalamat among tugbangan og katunga ang inyong madawat gikan sa national,”  Cortes said.

Education regional director Carmelita Dulangon during a program held at Mandaue Cultural and Sports Complex that culminated “Education Week” said the teachers will now start receiving their PEI.

“We are in the right place. Our work is not an occupation but a God-given mission, a place for joy where money cannot buy... the joy of teaching the children without expecting any return,” Dulangon said.

During the program, the city schools division, headed by Virginia Zapanta, awarded plaques of appreciation and certificates of recognition to 244 stakeholders and teachers who are service awardees for their contribution in one way or another to quality education of children.

Of the awardees, 25 teachers will also receive P10,000 for rendering at least 25 years of service in the city.

Among the stakeholders that received plaques were the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) for rewiring schools in the city, Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. for constructing additional 65 classrooms from 2011 to 2013, Security Bank Foundation for constructing additional 12 classrooms, Bidlisiw Foundation for financial and material assistance, Kaabag Foundation, Inc. for providing appropriate remedies through a feeding program, Cenapro Chemicals Corp. for donating office equipment, Mandaue City Public Schools Teachers Association (MCPSTA), Mandaue City School for the Arts and Mandaue City Science High School for getting one of the highest rates in the National Achievement Test (NAT).  (FREEMAN)
