Talisay wants DENR to help set up nursery for mangroves

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The Talisay City council has asked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to provide technical assistance as well as teach residents of seven coastal barangays on how to put up a nursery plantation for mangrove seedlings.

Councilor Antonio D. Bacaltos Jr., chairman of the committee on environment protection, wildlife ecology & natural resources management, said that planting of mangroves in strategic areas of the coastal barangays will lessen the damage a storm surge had caused on the coastal barangays.

According to Bacaltos, when the super typhoon "Yolanda" struck and caused unparalleled devastation on the country particularly Eastern Visayas on November 8, 2013, it showed how the coastal barangays are very vulnerable to destruction caused by the onslaught of a "storm surge."

"The coastal barangays need the technical assistance of the DENR in the planting of mangroves, the appropriate mangrove variety suited for the terrain in each barangay and the area where it can give the most beneficial effect," Bacaltos said.  (FREEMAN)
