Whether Alayon bet will win in ABC poll

Brenda Batuto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  It’s a mathematical certainty that Alayon’s candidate in the Association of Barangay Captains election for president in Talisay City next month will emerge winner and automatically become a member of the city council.

Fifteen village chiefs are allied with the party founded by former first district congressman Eduardo Gullas while its rival, the Liberal Party, can count on only seven chiefs.

Despite the disparity in number, LP will field Barangay Linao village chief Ofelia Ylanan, wife of city Councilor Val Ylanan, against Barangay Bulacao head Raul Cabañero.

Mayor Johnny De los Reyes said he will support Ylanan for the reason that Ylanan supported him when he ran for city mayor.

Alayon had endorsed Barangay Jaclupan captain Joel Orbiso as its bet in the contest but he appeared to have declined the offer because, being a businessman, he said he’d be more often pressed for time and this might compromise his work at City Hall.

But Gullas said Orbiso gave way to Cabañero.

Regarding rumors that some village chiefs identified with Alayon are poised to join the Liberal Party after the elections, Gullas said, “I don’t think so.”  (FREEMAN)
