Talisay SP told to study JO issue

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Should Talisay City councilors reduce their allocation of job order employees as Councilor Doroteo Emit has suggested?

Emit argues that by shrinking the number from 50 to just 20, the city can save P1.8 million every month, based on the monthly salary of each worker at P6,000.

“The city can save money if we shrink the number,” Emit told the city council.

But former city mayor and now city Councilor Socrates Fernandez doesn’t share Emit’s views.

Fernandez was known for his knack with the unemployed trying to find work during his stint as chief executive.

“I am into disagreement to return the 30 job orders. We are manifesting the hunger of the job order employees,” Fernandez told Emit.

As the usual practice,  job orders are allowed to work for two to three months at city hall, and when the period elapses, the city hires other people in need of gainful work.

Councilor Danilo Caballero said he will not surrender his quota either.

Emit said hiring more job orders is only a band-aid solution to the problem.

“The job order is only temporary. It’s only a band-aid solution. Wala man nato hikawi ang atong mga kaigso-onan pero dili lang dapat one month ilang pagtrabaho kun dili sustainable ilang panginabuhi,” Emit said.

Seeing that the argument was going nowhere, Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante told the councilors to  study  the proposal first before the council acts on Emit’s suggestion.  (FREEMAN)
