Mandaue has no evacuation center available

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City government may not be able to provide an evacuation center for people who come from places devastated by typhoon Yolanda, but it can readily provide food and other necessities such as medical assistance if they wish to stay with relatives in the city.

City Social Welfare Services chief Violeta Cavada yesterday said the city no longer has government buildings that can be considered safe for occupancy on account of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake last month.

Cavada said fifty families from Tacloban City are now staying at the Calderon Compound in barangay Opao.

Cavada also said the city has already validated 29 families in the city that will avail of financial assistance after losing their homes to an earthquake, a tornado, and typhoon Yolanda.

She said the City Disasters Risk Reduction and Management will convene soon to determine how much money will be given.

Mitsubishi Motors has asked the city to help their employees who may have been traumatized by the super typhoon. The company has a branch in Tacloban.

City administrator James Abadia said building a tent city was considered but dropped the idea because tents have become scarce.  (FREEMAN)
