CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, through its Gabay Guro Foundation, turned over a school building to the Buyong Elementary School in barangay Maribago yesterday.

In her message Mayor Radaza expressed her gratitude to PLDT.

“Thank you to the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and to your Gabay Guro Foundation,” Vice Mayor Marcial Ycong read Mayor Paz Radaza’s speech.

The mayor was in Olango Island yesterday.

“I am so thankful that some corporations have responded to our call to help the city reduce its classroom shortage by 50 percent in the next three years,” the mayor said.

As chief executive, Radaza said she has vowed to attend to the education of the young and to invest a portion of resources on them that they may become the future leaders and innovators, she said.

However, Radaza said this is no easy task as we are faced with a classroom shortage and a mountain of challenges on how to overcome it.

She said Buyong Elementary School can now accommodate more pupils and hold more classes.

This is truly a significant step towards achieving our goal of sharpening the minds of our children, she said.

“In the same way, I am very pleased to share with you all the outpouring support of individuals and organizations who share our dream towards better education in our city,” she said.

Just last July 22nd, the city received a one-story building with three classrooms and complete playground facilities for Babag II Elementary School from the Sports International Foundation.

Twelve more classrooms were donated by Mr. Ramon L. Chiu for Mactan High School three days later, July 25th.

Also, through the Special Education Fund, the city built another building for Poblacion Elementary School.

On August 28, the city received a two-story building with classrooms, complete with facilities, from the East Asia Utilities Corporation.

“My administration salutes you all for your generous support. Together, Lapu-Lapu City shall rise above poverty, unemployment and ignorance as we build more and more classrooms and educate more and more children beginning today and the many years to come,” she said.

I would like to once again thank the Philippine Long Distance Company (PLDT) and the many who offered their resources for the sake of improving the standard of education in our city. Our youth is our hope, Radaza said. – (FREEMAN)
