Jonas inaugurates new barangay gym

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - After 41 years of existence, barangay Bakilid in Mandaue City has finally constructed its own barangay gym.

This as the barangay also changed its outdated official seal.

Barangay captain Dionisio Villamor said the new barangay gym,  located in front of the barangay hall, sits on a 607 square meter-lot purchased by the city government for P2 million.

The gym, which takes its name from the lot owner, Don Jose Jayme, opened last Friday after Mayor Jonas Cortes, assisted by Villamor, unveiled its marker.

According to Villamor, they have already lighted the  P4 million facility in time for their barangay sportsfest.

Villamor said the barangay, which hosts the Norkis group of companies,  Benedicto College, Treasure Island, JCentre Mall, and other commercial and industrial firms has a hard time looking for available lots.

Barangay Bakilid, founded in 1972 has a present population of 8,000.

It acquired its own barangay hall only in 2008.

Villamor said to conform to the present reality, the old barangay logo which carries pictures of a mountain and a cornfield is now replaced with a new logo with infographics of a sun, school,  commercial building, factory, and grasses,

Earlier, the barangay conducted a logo contest participated by 12 “puroks”. Bonsam Art Derecho of Purok 8 won in the contest with a prize of P5,000. (FREEMAN)
