CEBU, Philippines - Officials of ABS-CBN and barangays Cabancalan and Canduman in Mandaue City cleaned the Butuanon River and planted trees along its banks.

The move was initiated by ABS-CBN Channel 3 which is celebrating its 25th year in the broadcast industry.

Vilma Andales, one of the TV anchors of ABS-CBN, lauded officials of Canduman and Cabancalan for their concern for the preservation of the environment.

Leo Jabas, barangay Canduman captain said he coordinates with the city government and neighboring Cabancalan.

Jabas also said business and industrial establishments near the Butuanon have assured him that no garbage will end up in the river.

He said waste from the mountain barangays of Cebu City and from those living near the river gives his office a headache.

Barangay Cabancalan Councilors Cynthia Remedio, Jun Saberon, and Harry Ceniza supported the cleaning of the Butuanon River.

Mandaue City Legal Officer Giovani Tianero said Mayor Jonas Cortes wants a better coordination between the business and private sectors in protecting and preserving the Butuanon River.

Barangay Subangdaku captain Ernie Manatad, president of the Association of Barangay Councils, said the Butuanon River needs the support of barangays where the river traverses. (FREEMAN)
