Mandaue eyes speedboat

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City government is set to purchase a speedboat for Bantay Dagat in response to claims by the city’s fishermen that fishermen from other places intrude into the city’s seawaters.

Roger Paller, the city’s information officer, said fishermen from the city have claimed that the intruders, who come from neighboring towns and cities in their motorized boats, use fine fish nets and are armed, not easy for anyone to confront. Hence, the city has decided to protect its seawaters.

The city’s Bantay Dagat is an inter-agency task force composed of representatives from the fishermen, the Dept. of Agriculture, the city council, and the PNP. —(FREEMAN)
