Enrollment in Talisay public schools go on

Brenda Batuto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Woodrow Denuyo, Superintendent of Department of Education Talisay City Division, can’t tell yet how many students from private schools would enroll in the Talisay City Central School this year.

What he is certain at present is that 50 students

from private schools have transferred to the Laray Elementary School in barangay San Roque.

He expects the number to rise in the coming days.

Denuyo said public schools principals as of 5:00 p.m. yesterday said 3,363 students have enrolled in kindergarten, 143 more than the previous year’s population.

In the elementary level, 28,333 have already enrolled, registering an increase of 2,296 to the number last year which stood at 26,037 students.

The number of students that enrolled in the high school level this year decreased by 1,628.

As of last Monday, only 9,930 students enrolled.   Last year, enrollees numbered 11,558.

Denuyo said the city will experience a shortage of classrooms because of the rise in the student population.

To solve the problem, most public schools will resort to shifting.

The first shift usually starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon, while the second shift stretches from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  (FREEMAN)
