20 Naga inmates eligible for high school, college

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Twenty of twenty-five inmates at the Naga City jail last year took and passed the equivalency tests administered by the Alternative Learning System of the city schools division, making six of them eligible for high school while 14 for college.

They will receive their certificates on Saturday at the garage of the Bureau of Fire and Protection City.

The Alternative Learning System aims to equip deserving inmates with technical skills that could help them become productive citizens while being in detention or after regaining their freedom.

The city schools’ ALS program is in accordance with Republic Act 9155, or the Basic Education Act of 2001, “as a parallel learning system designed to provide a viable alternative to the existing formal education instruction that encompasses both the non-formal and formal sources of knowledge and skills.”  (FREEMAN)
