CEBU, Philippines - The Wetaskiwia Fire Station in Wetaskiwia, Alberta, Canada has donated protective firefighting gears to the City of Talisay Fire Station.

Vice Mayor Alan Bucao, chairman of the committee on public safety, said some 41 sets of fire helmets, visors, fire boots, bonnets, gloves, and coats have been turned over to the Talisay City fire station.

Last February 22, 2013 the Wetaskiwia Fire Station in Wetaskiwia, Alberta, Canada through Simoun B. Canton III turned over protective firefighting gears to the City of Talisay Fire Station.

“The kind and generous act was timely as the City of Talisay Fire Station is in dire need to augment its firefighting gears to protect firefighters against the hazards of firefighting,” Bucao said in his proposed resolution.

In response to the generous act, Bucao said it is appropriate to express gratitude to Wetaskiwia Fire Station in Wetaskiwia, Alberta Canada through Simoun B. Canton III for their support by providing the City of Talisay Fire Station with personal protective firefighting gears.

Last week, the city of Talisay also received one fire truck from the Bureau of Fire Protection-Central Office.

According to BFP 7 director Maria Luisa Hadjula, the capability of local fire departments in Central Visayas will soon improve after their central office in Manila procured six fire trucks for the region.

Hadjula said the fire trucks will come from Austria and may arrive this month.

Recipients of the fire trucks include the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Tanjay and Bayawan.

This year’s Fire Prevention Month has the theme “Sunog at Sakuna Paghandaan, Kalikasan ay pangangalagaan upang matamasa ang Pag-Unlad nang Bayan.”

Hadjula said the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Month centers on not just fire prevention, but also on disaster preparedness and the preservation of the environment.

Hadjula said that she is also calling on the barangays to be active when it comes to fire prevention.

She added that this month, they are introducing programs wherein the local fire departments will coordinate with the barangays in order to disseminate safety tips to the general public. (FREEMAN)
