Burger joint cook stabs, kills robber

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The cook of a burger joint in barangay Poblacion in Talisay City used a bread knife to kill an armed man who attempted to rob him of his earnings yesterday.

Ambrosio Candule, 27, who serves as the cook-cum-attendant of Angel’s Burger, was at his work at around 4 in the morning when two men came and asked for some burgers.

Soon after, one of the men, who was later identified as Jun Rey Escare, 20, drew a .38 pistol and declared a hold-up, telling Candule to hand over his earnings to him.

Candule went to a drawer and took out P50 from it.

As he handed the money to Escare, Candule grabbed the gun.

Escare allegedly pulled the trigger but the gun allegedly failed to discharge.

Candule then grabbed a bread knife and then stabbed Escare, who then let go of the gun.

Escare freed himself and ran to his companion who was on a motorcycle.

When the robbers were gone, Candule went to the Talisay City Police Station and reported the incident, telling policemen he had stabbed one of the men.

Hours after the incident, the police station received a call from the Talisay City District Hospital which said that a man had died at its facility from serious stab wounds.

At the hospital, Candule confirmed that the dead man was the same man he had stabbed.

PO3 Benedicto Lasque, one of the investigators of the case, said Escare is from barangay Cansojong and may have been abandoned by his companion.

A witness claimed he saw Escare fall from the motorcycle and Escare’s companion abandoning him.

Barangay Dumlog watchmen who found the wounded Escare took him to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. (FREEMAN)
