Mandaue marks 75th year of Presidencia

- Flor Z. Perolina - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue City government will celebrate the 75 years of existence of its Presidencia (The city hall).

In line with the celebration tomorrow, the city is set to launch its coffee table book entitled “Mandaue: Our Home, Our Pride, Our Future.”

City treasurer Regal Oliva during yesterday’s press conference said the book will talk about the history of the city, the families who ruled the city, its industries, and what the future holds for the city.

Oliva said the book is what residents have been looking for because for quite a long time the city was just been known through brochures and magazines.

The book which contains 200 pages in all will be sold in bookstores for P3,000 each.

So far there are already 500 orders for the book, both local and abroad.

Aside from the book launching, a fashion show initiated by well-known designers will also be one of the events during the celebration wherein former Miss Mandaues will act as models.

Oliva said the city now plans to renovate the Presidencia but its looks will still remain the same because renovating the whole Presidencia including its looks might violate laws imposed by the National Historical Institute (NHI).

Structures 50 years old are considered a national heritage.

He said that even with the city’s plan to transfer city hall to another location, the Presidencia will remain and will serve as the city’s museum.

Earlier, the city planned to transfer the city hall to the North Reclamation area but it was found out that the space was too small for a city hall and there is the plan now to transfer the city hall to the reclamation area at barangay Labogon.

The proposal to transfer the government center might be realized in 2016 yet.  (FREEMAN)
