Barangays with garbage trucks to get fuel subsidy

CEBU, Philippines - A barangay with a garbage truck will receive from the Talisay City Government P5,000 every month for fuel and maintenance.

Association of Barangay Council (ABC) president Charles Basillote, who sits as ex-officio at the city council, yesterday said the allocation will be given within the third week of September.

Of the 22 barangays, only 16 have garbage trucks. These are Pooc, Lawaan 1, 2, and 3, Poblacion, Linao, San Isidro, Bulacao, Langtad, Dumlog, San Roque, Cansojong, Tanke, Jaclupan, Bulacao, and Tabunok.

“So, ang 16 ka barangays nga naay garbage truck, mao ra ang naay fuel allocation gikan sa city government,” Basillote said.

Basillote said that while the amount is not enough, it can greatly help the barangays, in terms of allowing their garbage trucks to operate.

Aside from the fuel allocation, Basillote is also asking the city to provide them with additional garbage trucks for barangays that don’t have one.

Basillote said there is a low probability that their request for additional garbage trucks will be approved this year.

Basillote said the fuel allocation will greatly help in the collection of garbage especially in strict implementation of the “No Segregation No Collection” policy.

Basillote said it was time to implement a better solid waste management scheme following an intensive and city-wide education and information campaign at the barangay level.

Basillote said the program seeks to follow the provisions of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001, which requires households as well as commercial and business establishments to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes and place them in separate garbage bags, which would be collected on a weekly basis.  (FREEMAN)
