Naga starts Charter Day gala today

CEBU, Philippines - The Naga City government has prepared a series of activities to make its 5th charter day celebration, which will fall on September 5, a memorable one.

Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong said the five-day celebration, which will start today, will kick off with the ground breaking ceremony for a new public market in barangay East Poblacion and this will be followed with a mass wedding that will be officiated by Father Marchel Urgel.

Chiong said the city will pay for the fees needed to acquire documents such as Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR), certificate of marriage, birth certificates, and even marriage counseling.

Residents will also try their luck at a job fair.

Chiong will personally monitor the outcome of the job fair.

The mayor will deliver his State of the City Address on Sept.5.

Situated 21 kilometers from Cebu City is Naga, dubbed as the “Industrial hub south of Cebu” because of the presence of vital industries.

Even before its elevation into a city, Naga was an industrial town with the 147-MW Salcon Power Corp. coal-fired plant and Apo Cement Corp. which produces 4,000 metric tons of cement daily.

The latter also has the distinction of being the country’s biggest factory and supplied cement to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Bolstering Naga’s industrial status was the opening last year of the KEPCO Philippines Corp. (KEPHILCO) 290-MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) thermal plant.

The city now boasts of a modern city hall complex, a new sports coliseum, a picturesque Baywalk Park, and a material recovery facility which recycles solid wastes of Naga and neighboring towns.     - THE FREEMAN
