Naga gives P1M to flood victims

- Garry B. Lao - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Naga City government has given the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the National Capital Region (DSWD-NCR) P1 million as financial assistance to thousands of families in Metro Manila that were displaced by massive flooding spawned by monsoon rains.

Mayor Valdemar Chiong handed over a check for P1 million to DSWD-NCR regional director Ma. Alicia S. Bonoan last August 13 in Manila.

“We have decided to donate some amount to help our affected countrymen,” Chiong said.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod, presided over by Vice Mayor Delfin Señor, heeded Chiong’s call to earmark P1 million as the City of Naga’s financial aid to the displaced families in Metro Manila and Luzon.

Naga is one of the progressive component cities in the province with an IRA of P242.011 million, excluding P500,000 as its share from national wealth, and P300,000 from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

Bonoan, for her part, expressed her gratitude and assured that the donation will reach the communities and families.

Report of disbursement will also be forwarded to his office.

Bonoan has also announced that DSWD will continue to accept donations for flood victims at DWD National Resources and Operations Center (NROC) located at NAIA Chapel Road, Pasay City (beside Airport Police Department and back of Transportation Office) with telephone numbers 852-8081 and 851-2681 or its Field Office at 389 San Rafael cor. Legarda Street, Sampaloc, Manila.

As of August 14, 2012, at least 64 evacuation centers are still open in various cities in NCR to accommodate 8,400 families or 36,979 individuals.

DSWD has also provided some P16.9 million worth of food and non-food assistance to the 17 local government units.

“We are also closely coordinating with the LGUs which serve as camp managers in assessing the needs of the flood victims, both inside and outside the evacuation centers, and in determining who among these victims need psychological interventions and stress debriefings,” Bonoan said.
