Talisay to reward graduating honor students in elementary, high school

CEBU, Philippines - Through a resolution, the Talisay City government will grant cash incentives to graduating top three honor students of the Talisay City’s public elementary and high schools.

To receive incentives are valedictorians, salutatorians, and those ranked first honorable mention in all public elementary and secondary schools.

City Councilor Dennis B. Basillote, Chairman Committee on Education, said the valedictorians shall receive P 3,000; salutatorians, P2,000 and first honorable mention, P 1,000.

Basillote said the cash incentive program is a small gesture of the city government to reward public school students who have strived to excel in their studies and bring honor to their respective schools and to the city as well.

“The grant of cash rewards to deserving students of the public elementary and secondary schools of the City of Talisay will motivate and inspire them to strive harder and excel in their academic performance,” Basillote said. 

The ordinance was sponsored by then city councilor and now city administrator Richel Bacaltos but was not acted upon during the previous council because the ordinance was not mentioned as to how much the amount was to be granted to honor students.

The ordinance only mentioned that the amount of individual cash rewards to awardees will only be determined by the Local School Board depending upon the availability of funds.

The ordinance was amended citing already the specific cash awards. 

In a committee report, Councilor Richard Francis Aznar, who is the chairman of the committee on laws, said the amendment has complied with the pre-requisites prescribed by law for an ordinance to be valid.

The cash awards will be conferred to the awardees on their respective graduation day as the funds for these incentives shall be taken from the Local School Board Budget.

To date, Talisay City has 17 public elementary schools and 18 public secondary schools.   - THE FREEMAN
