- Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - One died and four others were injured yesterday afternoon after a garbage truck owned by the Talisay City government fell on its side on a road in barangay Tapul after allegedly losing its brakes.

Declared dead on arrival at the hospital was Jerome Miaso, 20.

Injured were Rick Lapinid, Renante Abatayo, of barangay Dumlog, Paterno Cañeda, and Romel Amagos, 23, of barangay Tanke.

They were taken to the Talisay City District Hospital and later referred to the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

Traffic investigator PO3 Henry Diano said Miaso, Lapinid, and Abatayo were scavengers who hitched ride on the truck.

Driver Dante Olid, 44, of barangay Cansojong, sustained minor injuries.

Diano said the truck was loaded with garbage and was traveling down a slope when it allegedly lost its brakes.

Olid lost control of the truck, which fell on its side, pinning Miaso.
