Coastal villages in Talisay now under state of calamity

- Garry B. Lao - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City council yesterday declared all coastal barangays in the city under state of calamity following the damage wrought by tropical storm “Gener,” which inundated most areas in the coastal city, leaving hundreds of families displaced.

In yesterday’s special session, chairman of the committee on social welfare and services Councilor Celiapo Cabuenas said the families affected are in dire need of relief and rehabilitation assistance and the infrastructures damaged by big waves need rehabilitation.

Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center said 1,344 families and 5,408 individuals reside in coastal areas of barangays San Roque, Cansojong, Poblacion, Tanke, Biasong, Dumlog, and Pooc have been affected by the strong and big waves last July 30 and 31.

After getting the nod from the city council, Cabuenas said the city government can set aside money from its calamity funds for the much-needed support and assistance to the flood victims.

With that, the city government and other concerned local agencies and volunteers can focus on other typhoon-related problems.

Right now, the victims are being provided with food and other necessities, Cabuenas said.  - THE FREEMAN
