- Jose P. Sollano - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño, parish priest Msgr. Renato C. Beltran, Jr., and representatives of the business sector lighted a lantern instead of firecrackers after a torch parade yesterday as the town kicked off the start of the celebration of its fiesta in honor of Saint Santiago Apostol.

After a Mass was celebrated, the torch parade followed, which started and ended at the Santiago Apostol Church.

In front of the church, town officials headed by Mayor Quiño, religious groups headed by Msgr. Renato Beltran, Jr., barangay officials, the business sector, and parishioners gathered to witness the lighting of a lantern.

Mayor Quiño thanked the people for their cooperation.

Msgr. Beltran said he was happy to witness the unique affair.

Vice Mayor Dangoy, on the other hand, said it was the first time in Compostela where a lantern was lighted instead of firecrackers.

Dangoy said under the administration of Mayor Quiño they are now adopting the cleaner and greener Compostela.

The vice mayor believes that with a united Compostela, there is a brighter Compostela.

Later in the evening, “Barangayan Night” gave 17 barangays the opportunity to show talents of residents in drama, singing, and dancing.

Vice Governor Agnes Magpale said barangay night shows the importance of unity among barangay officials.

“Dinhi napakita sa atong mga opisyal sa barangay kon unsa ka mahinungdanon sa panaghiusa gumikan kay diha atong makab-ot ang kalampusan ug kalambuan,” Magpale said.
