CEBU, Philippines - A group of young people took part last Saturday in a “Waste Workshop Seminar” held at the Aznar Beach Resort in barangay Poblacion, Talisay.
“The purpose of the workshop seminar was to awaken the youth on the severity of the issue about improper waste management, what they can do to help the LGU in solving the garbage problem, data banking by conducting waste characterization and, the connection of wastes to climate change,” Erick Auza of the Center for Environmental Initiatives (CEI)-Talisay City said.
CEI picked barangays Dumlog, San Isidro, and Lawaan III as pilot areas as chosen by the city’s Ecological Solid Waste Management Board (ESWMB) during its Strategic Planning last year.
And starting June 5, a World Environment Day, the Sangguniang Kabataan officials of these pilot areas and youth volunteers from their respective jurisdictions, will start weighing the garbage while these are collected according to category — whether these are biodegradables, residuals, or recyclables.
The data will then be presented to the ESWMB on its monthly meeting. – (FREEMAN)
