- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - More than 1,000 residents of barangay Basak in Mandaue City availed of the services of a medical mission sponsored by the Cebu Queen City Lions Club, the second time the same club sent a medical team to the city.

Last March, almost the same number of residents benefited from the mission.

Behind the medical mission were the Cebu provincial government, the Philippine College of Surgeons, Cebu Eastern Visayas Chapter, Cebu Far Eastern Drug, Inc., International Pharmaceutical Incorporated, Cebu City Dental Team, AFP Central Command Medical Team, Mandaue City Medical Team, the 78th Infantry Battalion based in Asturias, and barangay officials.

The half-day activity was held at the Sports Complex of Basak Elementary School.

Capitol Consultant and Cebu Queen City Lions Club president Jose Ma. Gastardo told The FREEMAN that the medical mission was organized in response to the needs of the people of barangay Basak.

Gastardo said the residents received free medical, pediatric, dental, optical, and surgical services as well as haircuts.

About 425 patients availed of free consultations, 220 children were circumcised, 125 received dental attention, while three persons underwent minor surgery.

A total of 290 residents were given free eyeglasses after consultation, 94 were given free haircut, 300 availed of free food, and 130 received free slippers.

All the beneficiaries went home with medicines.

Gastardo said the Lions Club had also conducted medical missions in Cebu towns and in some places in Bohol.
