Mandaue dumps waste in landfill in Consolacion

CEBU, Philippines - The Mandaue city government has started to dump its waste at the sanitary landfill in Consolacion town.

Engineer Ricardo Mendoza, head of the Barangay Solid Waste Management, in an interview with reporters, said the city sent its solid waste to the sanitary landfill in Consolacion town during the Holy Week in response to the suggestion of the contractor who is rehabilitating the dumpsite in barangay Umapad.

Mendoza said the contractor has assured the city that the dumpsite’s total rehabilitation will be finished in July.

The city government has set aside P3 million for the delivery of its waste to the sanitary landfill for six months. The landfill charges P700 as tipping fee for every ton of waste.

City trucks will be on hand to help barangays dispose of their waste.

Mendoza said a weighing scale in the town determines how much waste is delivered to the landfill.

The city approximately produces more or less 250 tons of garbage each day, 100 tons of garbage coming from households while 150 tons are industrial waste.

But since most of the 27 barangays in the city already have their own Material Recovery Facility, the city’s waste has been reduced by 40%.

Eight barangays have yet to build their own MRFs.  (THE FREEMAN)
