Man electrocuted inside mosque in Lapu-Lapu

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A 21-year-old man was electrocuted Wednesday morning inside a mosque in barangay Basak,Lapu-Lapu City while preparing the sound system.

Emadodin Ameril, a resident of sitio Iba, barangay Basak, who served as the mosque’s “Bilal,” or the one who is in charge of announcing that a worship is about to start, was setting up the sound system with his father and elder brother in preparation for the 1 p.m. prayers when a wire separated from a microphone and fell into ankle-deep water.

Ameril fell into the water. His father and brother felt the surge of electricity but quickly got out of the water.

A few minutes later, the wire from the power source was disconnected and father and brother and some neighbors immediately attended to Emadodin.

They took him to hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

Mango, Emadodin’s father, sustained hand burns, had difficulty breathing, and was advised by a doctor to be confined.

He declined because his son had to be buried that day.

Emadodin’s brother Sihawe was not injured. It was he who asked neighbors to help bring Emadodin to hospital.

Emadodin’s family had expressed disappointment with barangay officials for failing to provide a vehicle to take family members, relatives, and friends to the cemetery in sitio Guba in barangay Talamban, Cebu City.

The family said the offices of the city mayor and congressman were also notified about the request for a vehicle, but the appeal was allegedly ignored.

But help came from humble sources.

Some neighbors who drive jeepneys for a living offered their vehicles, and Emadodin was buried at 3:00 p.m.  (FREEMAN)
