Talisay College gets authorization to offer additional courses

-

CEBU, Philippines - The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently granted authority to several courses offered by the Talisay City College (TCC).

In a brief ceremony at the city hall last week, Mayor Socrates Fernandez turned over the certificate of authority from CHED to TCC director Tomas Ramos.

Ramos, in a statement, explained that the authority is for the TCC’s Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BSED), and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.

Ramos considered this new achievement a “considerable success” for a seven-year-old school, which was established during the time of then Talisay City Mayor now first district Rep. Eduardo Gullas.

“Indeed, Talisay City College has gone a long way from its humble beginnings and its considerable success can be attributed in no small measure to the unflinching support and sacrifice of the many stakeholders of the college,” said Ramos.

Ramos said that CHED has granted the school such authority following TCC’s “continuing efforts towards ensuring substantive compliance” with the institution’s requisites for accreditation.

In the short period since it started, TCC has already made its impressive mark by producing a number of top board passers in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

The school’s overall passing percentage also ranks among the best in this jurisdiction.

Recently, it ranked No. 8 out of the 1,302 colleges and universities that participated in the PRC-administered licensure examination for teachers in the secondary level in school years 2008 to 2009, and 2009 to 2010.

Ramos said TCC is the only local college to have penetrated such prestigious top ten listing, placing it in the elite company of the country’s leading universities like the University of the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University.

“Such feat would be hard to surpass and it was attained despite the usual handicaps and limitations that beset local colleges -- fiscal or otherwise,” he said.

Apart from these academic laurels, the ROTC unit of the college has also been adjudged number one in several Reserved Officers’ Training Corps tactical competitions in the region, besting well-established private universities.

The college is also accredited as an Assessment Center by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) since December 8, 2008.

The college director said that out of this partnership with TESDA, TCC students area given exposure to relevant skills competency and required to undergo examinations en route to acquiring Certificates of Proficiency in various technical fields like National Certificate II in Personal Computer Operations, Computer Hardware Servicing, Consumer Electronic Servicing, Commercial Cooking, Housekeeping and Health Spa, to name a few.
