Mandaue dad looks after sales people in stores

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A proposed ordinance introduced by a Mandaue City councilor seeks to require all department stores in Mandaue to allow salesladies and salesmen, whose jobs require them to stand for long hours, to rest for 30 minutes without deductions in their salaries.

The draft, authored by Councilor Demetrio Cortes Jr., penalizes establishments that fail to comply with the provisions of the ordinance.

Cortes, in his draft ordinance, said that with the influx of commercial establishments to the city, there is the need to protect the rights of workers and promote their welfare as stipulated under Section 18, Article II of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.

Cortes said establishments are alo required to provide strategic resting areas with seats for their employees.

Erring department stores shall be penalized with a P1,000 fine for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense, and P5,000 and suspension of business permit to operate for three months.
