DPWH to try and keep A.S. Fortuna dry

CEBU, Philippines - Hernan Cortes Street and A.S Fortuna Street in barangay Banilad, Mandaue City will soon be free from flooding as soon as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) starts a project worth P45 million.

In August this year, sixth district representative Luis Gabriel Quisumbing requested DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson to help address the perennial problem in the area which is considered as a major artery in the road network in the sixth district.

The appeal came after a report from DENR declaring that Cebu has the most number of barangays which are prone to landslides and flooding. 

The geohazard mapping by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau stated that seven barangays in Mandaue have been identified as susceptible to flooding and these barangays include Subangdaku, Mantuyong, Umapad, Opao, Alang-alang, Guizo, and Paknaan.

“We thank DPWH Secretary Singson for heeding our appeal relative to the A.S Fortun project. We plan to continue coordinating with the DPWH on this project and hopefully the A.S. Fortuna-Hernan Cortes drainage facilities will be extended further to provide a lasting solution to this problem,” Quisumbing in  press release said.

Quisumbing also said his office has also devoted a substantial portion of his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) in the entire six district composed of the towns of Consolacion, Cordova, and Mandaue for road rehabilitation, drainage repairs, and flood control infrastructure works.

He said there is the need to coordinate with the appropriate agencies to address the flooding and prevent the damage to property and injury to his constituents as he does not want to wait for casualties to occur during disasters. 

Quisumbing also urged his constituents to  participate to help mitigate disaster-relating problems by segregating garbage and planting more trees. - THE FREEMAN
