Patching of Maguikay flyover chokes traffic

CEBU, Philippines - An unannounced road patching of the Maguikay flyover by the Department of Public Works and Highways left angry commuters stranded for more than two hours yesterday.

Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) director Edwin Ermac yesterday said traffic was rerouted at 11 o’clock after learning about the work at the flyover.

Ermac said a call from DPWH caught him off-guard.

He said most road projects are done at night.

A council resolution provides that TEAM should be informed before any road project is undertaken.

Trucks and jeepneys that normally traverse the flyover were directed toward the road under the flyover, which caused a bottleneck.

For a while, traffic was at a standstill along M. C. Briones Highway that stretched up to the highway in barangay Tipolo.

Ermac apologized for the inconvenience the patching had caused commuters but also emphasized the need for it.

“Grabe na man sad gud nuon ang libaong anang fly-over busa kinahanglan na dyud asphaltohon kay sa wa pa na tapaki mo-build-up gyud og traffic  from M.C Briones highway kutob na diha sa Tipolo,” Ermac said. - THE FREEMAN
