Mandaue to decide which method is best to deliver its waste to landfill
CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue has yet to come up with the best procedure to deliver residual waste from the city's 27 barangays to a private landfill in Consolacion town.
Head of the Solid Waste Management Board Engr. Ricardo "Gaga" Mendoza said the board will tackle within this week the procedure of delivery of the city's residual waste to Asian Energysystem Corporation, a private landfill in Consolacion town.
He said that with the closure of the Umapad open dumpsite in 2007 and is now undergoing rehabilitation for its transformation into an eco-park and a sanitary landfill, the city needs a "transfer station" where all the city's garbage will be deposited.
And due to the absence of this station, Mendoza said one of the options is to detail some personnel to inspect garbage trucks to make sure these only carry purely residual waste before being allowed to proceed to the private landfill. The private landfill only accepts residual wastes.
The city earlier decided to temporarily take its garbage to Consolacion when it found out that taking its garbage to the Umapad dumpsite could only hamper the ongoing rehabilitation.
The Open dumpsite was ordered closed during the term of office of Mayor Jonas Cortes but its closure also paved the way for an opening of a one-hectare sanitary landfill and an eco-park in the same site. (FREEMAN)
