"Barangayan" in Subangdaku today

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - To make sure that basic services are delivered down to the grassroot level, the Mandaue City government will resume its “barangayan” today.

The "barangayan" first initiated in 2008 during Mayor Jonas Cortes’ first term in office, aims to bring the government closer to the people.

City administrator James Abadia said there is the need to carry on with the “barangayan” after the city learned that some residents are apprehensive to approach the local government for help.

Today's “barangayan” will be held at 8 a.m. in barangay Subangdaku, the biggest barangay in the city where children will be given free food.

Aside from medical services, other services such as health and free legal counseling will be rendered by the City Social Welfare Services. Mayor Jonas Cortes will be on hand to answer queries from residents during an open forum which is set at 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Joining the mayor will be city hall department heads.

The local government early this year held a “barangayan” in barangay Umapad but it ceased to continue owing to calamities that hit the city. - THE FREEMAN
