To Solve Flooding, Why not try viaducts?

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - Why not build viaducts in low-lying barangays while the city is struggling to raise more than a billion pesos to be able to implement a master drainage plan?

City Councilor Diosdado Suico, the majority floor leader in the Mandaue City council, has proposed a resolution seeking the construction of viaducts in the low-lying major thoroughfares in the city.

Suico said most of the city’s roads are easily flooded and are even impassable the water level rises, putting lives at risk.

He said flooding is caused by obstructions on waterways, clogging of drainage systems due to the indiscriminate throwing of household waste, inappropriate sizes of drainage pipes, and compounded by uneven levels of land traversed by roads.

Suico said cited A.S. Fortuna Street in barangay Bakilid and Pilit Road in barangay Cabancalan as the flood-prone areas. He said cisterns had been built but these are not enough considering that the opening of a cistern is only 3 inches in diameter.

He said a viaduct will help a lot since the low-lying areas will level with the high rise roads. - THE FREEMAN
