CEBU, Philippines - Two garbage collectors were detained yesterday for collecting garbage without transport and business permits.
Driver Henry Purgatorio, 36, of Oslob town and assistant Randy Jaca, 27, were detained at the Subangdaku police station in Mandaue City while their multicab pick-up was taken Wednesday evening to the Umapad dumpsite after their apprehension by men from the Solid Waste Enforcement Team at the Ouano Avenue at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
Placido Jerusalem of the of the City's Solid Waste Management board said the vehicle since June this year has been collecting unsegregated garbage put out by a fastfood outlet located at the Reclamation Area.
Jerusalem said the two men have been detained to prevent them from fleeing without paying the P7,000 fine imposed on violators.
The two men have 72 hours to come up with the amount otherwise charges for violation of the R.A 9003 will be filed against them.
This arrest is the solid waste enforcement team's second this week.
Last Monday afternoon, three men were arrested for a similar offense.
Driver Adriano Alinsonod of barangay Umapad, Mandaue City was with two other garbage collectors when caught while about to unload trash at the dumpsite.
He was issued with citation ticket and was cited for illegal disposal of unsegragated waste, illegal disposal of hazardous waste, and entering into a contract for a fee to dispose domestic waste in the city ,wherein all three violations carries P7,000 fines.
Alinsonod is a driver of the Cebu Solid Waste Company which collects garbage in Cebu City. He also lacked transport and business permits. — THE FREEMAN
