Paz determined to put a stop to illegal fishing
CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said the city government will look for residents in the different barangays that will help the police in the campaign against illegal fishing.
Radaza said some residents will even be picked from barangays that do not have coastal waters.
"Magamit man gihapon nato ang mga tawo sa uban nga barangay nga walay dagat kay ato man kini ipadala sa mga lugar nga adunay problema sa illegal fishing," Radaza said.
The city mayor said she is alarmed by recent incidents involving fishermen using dynamites and other forms of illegal fishing.
Two fishermen were killed one after the other in a span of three months for allegedly using dynamites.
However, Radaza said the solution to the problem is not to arrest them but to provide them with an alternative livelihood.
She said it is now the concern of her administration to look for funds for the implementation of livelihood programs designed exactly for the marginal fishermen. (FREEMAN)
