Lapu-Lapu to regulate operation of jetskis, etc.

CEBU, Philippines -  The Lapu-Lapu City Council has approved an ordinance on first reading that seeks to regulate the operation of jetskis, para sailing, banana boat riding, and other aqua sports activities.

The city council agreed to refer the proposed ordinance to the city council committees on environment, laws and sports. The committees are scheduled to conduct a public hearing next week.

City Councilor Alexander Gestopa, Jr., chairman of the committee on environment and natural resources who introduced the proposed ordinance said a series of incidents involving jetskis have resulted to deaths of fishermen.

The most recent happened in barangay Punta Engaño.

Gestopa's proposal states that a certification should be issued by the city government recognizing the holder's compliance with the standards required in the operation of the sports establishment concerned.

The city councilor also proposes limiting parasails to fly not more than 600 feet high.

A jetski, wave runner, parasail, banana boats and similar rides shall take passengers, riders only from a floating station/platform located some 150 meters offshore away from the shore bathers and outside from any specially designated areas such as marine sanctuaries.

Transporting passenger from shore point to the floating platform must not create waves in its wake as to disturb and imperil bathers, snorkelers, and divers.

The proposed ordinance also mentions fines and penalties. (FREEMAN)
