Lapu-Lapu to hold street party April 30

- Jose P. Sollano -

MANILA, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City government wants to revitalize the annual celebration of “Kadaugan sa Mactan” held April 27 by introducing “Kadaugan Street Party” to be held on April 30.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza and Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Don Radaza made the announcement yesterday.

Councilor Radaza said the street party would offer street dancing, live bands, free concerts, a Volkswagen Car Show, Car Audio Bass

contest, tricycle contest, gourmet walk with the participation of resorts and hotels.

Radaza said the “Battle of Mactan” ought to be celebrated not only by Lapu-Lapu City but by all Filipinos where ever they are in the world.

“That is why I feel the need for this victory to be not just simply remembered or comme-morated but should be celebrated in the real sense of a celebration with the trappings of a city party,” Mayor Radaza said.

For several years now, celebrities have taken the roles of Lapu-Lapu, Ferdinand Magellan, and Reyna Bulakna.

On this particular day, a fluvial procession of adorned outrigger canoes representing Magellan's three ships, the planting of the Cross of Magellan, and the baptism of the natives followed by the battle, will be presented.

This year’s “Kadaugan Street Party,” Reyna Bulakna, wife of Datu Lapu-Lapu, would be the star in the street dancing.

Barangays in the city and other districts in the province are expected to send contingents for the street dancing.

Streets will be closed starting on the evening of April 29.
