Consolacion seeks halt to quarrying operations

CEBU, Philippines - The municipal council of Consolacion, through Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, has asked the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office to temporarily suspend quarrying operations in the town.

The town, in a resolution, said the basis for the suspension is stated on Section 16 of Republic Act 7160 known as the Local Government Code under the General Welfare Clause empowers local government units to enact and implement measures for the general well-being of their inhabitants.

The resolution further said that the Local Government Code also recognizes the role of the municipality to protect and conserve control and supervise the exploration, development, utilization and conservation of the country's natural resources.

"Environmental Management is one of the crucial keys towards the attainment of socio-economic progress for the town," the resolution said.

The municipal council further said that there are reports from the PAG-ASA that the Visayas Region will be experiencing heavy rains.

Heavy rains could loosen soil and rock formation that might cause flashfloods, soil erosion, and landslide. (FREEMAN)
