NGO tapped in campaign versus road crimes

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - The Police Regional Highway Patrol Unit in Central Visayas (RHPU7) has partnered with a non-government organization to augment its campaign against carnapping and other cases involving abusive drivers.

The other day, the unit, represented by Police Senior Supt. Felixberto Castillo, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Communication Response on Enforcement and Welfare on the Streets (CREWS) represented by Joseph Oliver Wenceslao. CREWS is based in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Both parties agree that the continued occurrence of carnapping incidents in Metro Manila has prompted and elected serious concerns on the part of RHPU and other law enforcement agencies in the region.

Both parties also agree that there is a need to adopt adequate security measures and a common contingency plan to discourage, protect the vehicle owners, motorists, and commuters. Region 7 has reportedly been identified as a market of stolen vehicles from Luzon.

Top police officials strongly encouraged RHPU 7 to enlist the services of non-government organizations and other sectors in the community in reducing, if not totally eradicating incidents of carnapping, high jacking, and highway robbery in Region 7.

Under the MOA, CREWS personnel will assist law enforcement agencies in traffic direction and control particularly in busy intersections where there is shortage of PNP personnel. (FREEMAN)
