It’s a smoke show out there

Backstage at Chanel Haute Couture

Eyeliner was first documented in the form of kohl from over 12,000 years ago in Mesopotamia and Egypt. Worn by men and women of high status, it was rimmed artfully around the eyes, not only to protect the wearer from the glare of the desert, but also to depict their status with one look. For Julia Fox, the season’s front row superstar and significant other to Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), she might as well have been wearing them to see through flashing camera lights.

At Chanel, the polish of Virginie Viard’s haute couture is contrasted with the rebellious smoky eyes on the models. Straddling the thin line between 2010s emo and a black eye from the worst-case scenario of falling off Charlotte Casiraghi’s well-behaved horse (the royal and excellent equestrienne opened the runways on horseback), the rule to err gracefully on the former look is to mix up the eyeliner and buff out the strokes with a pigmented eyeshadow to adjust the depth and dimension of black accordingly (black is never just black).

Chanel Beauty’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof in 88 Noir Intense and Les 4 Ombres in 334 Modern Glamour, dabbed on with the Les Pinceaux de Chanel 200 Retractable Dual-Ended Eyeshadow brush, were spotted backstage, topped off with a mascara, the volumizing Le Volume de Chanel in N°1 Noir.

The look represents clarity of vision. Application feels akin to streaking on the war paint to face the battle ahead.
