Saint Laurent explores its soft side

Saint Laurent spring/summer 2021 explores new terrain with an unrestricted point of view for menswear.

Anthony Vaccarello has stepped away from the fashion calendar. For spring/summer 2021, the Saint Laurent creative director presented his new collection in a video format with cinematic proportions.

Titled "No Matter How Long The Night Is," the digital presentation sends the collection out wandering the globe. The film features models Parkour-ing and strutting across rooftops and landmarks in New York, Beijing and Paris. Think the film Divergent meets video game Assassin’s Creed but make it fashion. You can watch the full video on the brand’s social media platforms.

With the world still slowly recovering from the pandemic, the film resembles a sort of post-apocalyptic world where humans run free, social distancing and face masks excluded. Vaccarello presents an offering of what we should be wearing by spring/summer of next year.

With a brand heritage that’s synonymous with razor-sharp tailoring, Saint Laurent explores a softer, more at-ease, adaptable-to-the-times collection. With sweatpants and loungewear reaching peak performance in everyone’s wardrobe in the last six months, the collection teases our way back from pajamas. Vaccarello sent out boho-centric looks with the spirit of Saint Laurent’s tailoring in mind.

Gauzy blousons and knee-length tunic shirting make a tempting outdoor staple; the Hawaiian-inspired shirts in vibrant hues are reminiscent of summers past; sheer gilet blouses are cut and crafted with softness and ease in mind; robe coats and slouchy but luxe knits are perfect for the couch or for going out and about; fluid pants, carrot-leg trousers, and Bermudas are paired with basket-weave shoes, mesh slip-ons and Jesus sandals; army surplus bomber jackets are produced in sophisticated gloss and joyous prints.

And the suits? It wouldn’t be a Saint Laurent collection without one. They’re here but with an easier fit, tailored but with room for movement.
