MANILA, Philippines — The ‘90s and early ‘00s were a great time for purses. For every woman and teenage girl, Kate Spade was on the top of everyone’s wish list. With a new creative director onboard, the brand finds itself returning to its roots by means of vintage-inspired silhouettes and a fun take on color play.
The brand debuted its first-ever runway show under the direction of Nicola Glass at the iconic New York Public Library last September. Glass looked to its archive for inspiration and reworked the classic spade logo whilst making sure that the design element was present throughout the collection. The lineup referenced to the ‘70s and ‘40s in highly saturated hues of lavander, chartreuse and bubblegum pinks. The feminine silhouettes also prove to be a perfect match for the modern woman who wants to incorporate graphic prints and unexpected color combinations into her everyday wardrobe. “I saw so much opportunity to evolve the collection, while maintaining Kate Spade’s strong brand heritage and unique personality. Overall, the collection is more modern and less retro; there is a sense of polished ease. It’s both sophisticated and youthful, with an air of sensuality,” Nicola explains.
Let’s talk accessories. Handbags take on a new level of luxury with unique applications that are all rooted in the idea of everyday luxuries. One purse came with a spade twist-lock detail, while the other showed a laser-cut bucket bags created from stacked spades. “Details are very important to me. Our new products are intended to be experienced up close; not everything is visible at first glance,” the creative director adds.
To continue her streak in honoring the brand, Nicola welcomes back long-time brand collaborator Tim Walker as photographer for their first campaign. Actress Julia Garner from Ozark, Sadie Sink of Stranger Things and Kiki Layne of If Beale Street Could Talk all star in the campaign for 2019. All three women represent the brand’s new ethos of encouraging women to be the heroines of their own story.
