Smoke and mirrors

MANILA, Philippines - This November, 19-year-old AB-Multimedia Arts student Genica Inciong gives us an All Souls Day-inspired YStyle logo, which is a lot less creepy than it sounds. She’s currently in her third year at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.

YSTYLE: How would you describe your aesthetic?

Genica Inciong: Evolving and non-uniform

What types of projects are you working on?

Graphic design work, experimenting on Maya, and some school-related projects.

When you hear “YStyle,” what kind of images or ideas does your mind conjure up?

Fashion and sophisticated images.

What was your concept for the new Ystyle logo?

Araw ng Patay — I was inspired by candle photos with bokeh lights all over. It’s also nice that bokeh reminds me of Christmas, and Christmas is really near. The smoke is still from the Araw ng Patay concept, and I really like how the colors of the bokeh pop with the dark background, which signifies the night. That’s the usual time we visit my grandfather who has passed away; we tend to stay till morning.

Were you listening to music while you were designing it? What song? On purpose or on shuffle?

Yes, mainly Two Door Cinema Club and Phoenix because their songs make me really pumped up to work and lift up my mood.

Who/what inspires your art?

My friends who are artists also inspire my work. I am also inspired by the illustrations in manga and the books and movies I see.

Who/what inspires your personal fashion sense?

Tokyo fashion, Pretty in Pink, Mori fashion, etc. My fashion is really according to my mood, versatile and non-uniform. It’s like one day, I would want to wear punk clothing, on the others I want to wear frilly stuff. Sometimes, I mix both.

The year’s almost over. How did you spend it?

With tons and tons of school work, and eating. Occasionally sleeping, gaming and shopping.

What upcoming projects do you have?

I haven’t thought of upcoming projects yet. School work and occasional jobs and favors really take up my time.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

I want to take a Master’s degree on the elective I choose, either in Japan or the United States. I would want to have a job on the side of that too.
