When the phrase “holiday fashion” comes to mind, we automatically think of luxe fabrics, deep jewel colors and feminine, frilly silhouettes. This seasonal cliché has been shunned for 2009 and, for the first time in recent fashion history, we are embracing a tougher and sexier look for the holidays. The look is a carryover from the rock and roll vibe of fall with a heavy ‘80s influence. Extravagance is reinterpreted in bold shoulders, embellished cover-ups, and glittery studs. There is shine — not with the usual metallic materials, but with the sheen of leather and PVC. The palette is dark and brooding. It seems that in the world of fashion, ‘tis the season to give tough love.
