The long and short of it

If a woman suddenly chops off her hair out of the blue, it can only be one of two things: she wants a major change in her life so she’s starting with her hair, or she has just broken up with her boyfriend. When things are going well, a girl will not touch her hair unless she’s in the salon or beauty industry. Starting a life change with a haircut might seem trivial for boys, but women everywhere will nod in agreement when I say the chapters in our lives can be marked by the changes we did to our hair, no matter how subtle.

But what if you can change your hairstyle and length this instant? Make it thicker, longer, wavy, or short. What if we can have that edgy cut without having to deal with a nasty break-up first? Would you jump for it? I don’t pay that much attention to my hair. I only brush it after I take a bath and just let it be whatever it wants to be for the rest of the day. This nonchalance isn’t borne out of perfect hair, it’s just that I’ve made peace with my fine, slightly wavy and wispy hair. That is until I saw two amazing options that could change my hair and, therefore, my life forever.

For girls who can’t commit

I have always though that clip-on hair extensions were only for movie stars and pop starlets. Who, afterall, would want Dyesebel curls every day? As it turns out, most women! That’s what propelled Denise Aquino of Tokyo Posh salon to bring the novel idea of clip-on hair extensions to the Philippines. “While studying fashion in Japan, I saw how adventurous and stylized the hair of the Japanese was. I also had a bad haircut so I explored my options there and discovered affordable clip-on extensions,” shares Denise. Her shop specializes in clip-on fillers (for thinning at the top of the scalp), bangs, half-wigs and full wigs. You can have thicker hair, longer hair or even just full bangs in less than one minute! Being the non-hair-aficionado that I am, I was surprised by the tingle down my spine as I tried on the different hair styles. It was like being in a perfect world, where I could have great hair every day. Oh the possibilities! “Our items blend seamlessly with your normal hair. They’re not too shiny like other synthetic hair products. Aside from the kikay possibilities of our products, these are also great for those with thinning hair due to illnesses,” adds Denise. The best part about all this? You don’t have to commit to just one look! You can change your look every day. You can be ready for special events in an instant. What sealed the deal for me was how affordable her products were: bangs are P900. Dyosa hair extensions are P2,500.

For the long-term babes

A hot friend came into a shoot of mine looking hotter than usual. I was trying to figure out what was new. It turns out she had semi-permanent hair extensions attached to hair! Until then, I didn’t realize how thicker, longer hair could really add ganda points. What’s the diff between clip-ons and attached hair extensions? “We pioneered glued-on hair extensions in the Philippines. These extensions stay put in your hair so you can go about your usual activities, even strenuous ones, with no worries of your extensions falling off,” shares Fred Penales, signature stylist and owner of Hairshaft Salon. Fancy doing a cannonball into the pool? No worries, you won’t find hair floating around after you take the plunge. “The best part about our extensions is that we use 100 percent human hair from Filipino donors. This means you can blow-dry it, curl it, color it, do whatever you want just like with your own hair,” adds Fred. So if you want a longer lasting solution to your hair woes, this option would be perfect for you. But anything long-term always involves some investment on your part as well. “Prices start at P15,000, depending on the required amount and length of extensions.”

So whether you find it hard to stick to one, or you’re in it for the long haul, we should all rejoice because bad hair days can now be a thing of the past.
