See the best in furniture at Manila FAME
MANILA, Philippines - Manila FAME is back to show off Filipino craftsmanship. For its 61st run, the design and lifestyle event continues to promote arts and crafts, home furnishings, fashion and gifts made by the country’s best designers. This weekend, the fair will have the Light and Shadow exhibit, where Jinggoy Buensuceso, Stanley Ruiz and Wataru Sakuma created lighting products for the International Year of Light; Manila Wear, a collection of designs from acclaimed fashion designers who marry artisanal crafts and contemporary tastes; Design Week, a supporting event that celebrates Filipino design in different disciplines; the OTOP (One Town, One Product) Marketplace where home-based enterprises sell regional items made from indigenous materials; and the Katha Awards, the industry’s most prestigious award. World-renowned designers Budji Layug, Kenneth Cobonpue and Josie Natori are tasked to curate the design pageantry, so we expect it to be the most tasteful yet. Head on over to the SMX Convention Center, MOA.
Hang out with Ang Bandang Shirley
It’s not every day that your favorite band offers to “hang out,” so when they do, you better RSVP yes and be there. Everybody’s hipster favorite Ang Bandang Shirley is holding a T-shirt launch today at Moonleaf Tea Shop in Maginhawa Street (Teachers Village, Quezon City), to promote the single Nakauwi Na from the “Tama Na Ang Drama” album and to chill. The band will also sell pre-loved items to raise funds, and others will be there to set up shop, too. There will be a free gig, and the band will perform with Lullaband, Shirebound & Busking, and Ourselves the Elves. Who cares about big names when you have a band who’ll hang out with you and sell you stuff?
Go ‘Into the Woods’
Forget the film adaptation starring Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep. Upstart Productions is doing a local production of Into the Woods, and while it does not have the budget of the Hollywood film, it makes up for it with creativity, ingenuity and surprises. For its local run that ends this weekend, the setting is the “woods,” a space in Bonifacio Global City called the Kalikasan Garden (De Jesus Oval). For those who are unaware, Into the Woods is a Tony-winning Broadway musical that combines Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Theater veteran Joel Trinidad directs the cast, composed of other veterans like Rachel Alejandro, Reb Atadero, Lorenz Martinez, Noel Rayos, Shiel Valderrama-Martinez, and many more. The outdoor setting of the garden makes the play more realistic, but Trinidad calls everything else “gloriously fake.” There’s a surprise guest in every performance, which makes us wonder: is it the Big Bad Wolf?
