Reminisce lost love with The xx
MANILA, Philippines - It’s funny to imagine a large crowd of people, wildly cheering (in their minds) for a band known for their bittersweet and minimalist music, silently crooning the most heartfelt of lyrics while groupies scream their lungs out (again, in their minds) trying to follow the lyrics. But that will surely be the case when The xx performs in Manila for their first concert on Tuesday. The band broke through mainstream (or shall we say indie) consciousness when they released their eponymous first album, filled with the most melancholic songs on love and heartbreak. It’s impossible not to be touched by any of their songs, and the same goes with their new album, “Coexist.†The new album has a touch of electronica but does not lose the band’s trademark loneliness and intimacy, adding hypnotic depth to the soft murmurs on failed relationships. Don’t miss out on what could be the most depressing concert of the year. The xx concert will be held at the NBC Tent in BGC, at 7 p.m.
Wear your art at ArtWearable
They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but girls these days are raised on Gaga and Nicki Minaj. Forget the elegance of Audrey Hepburn, their idea of glamour is maximalism and flashy jewels. Enter ArtWearable, the Yuchengco Museum’s exhibit on art as fashion. The artists whose pieces are on display are Arturo Luz, Hans Brumann, Eduardo Castrillo, Ramon Orlina, Ann Pamintuan, Impy Pilapil, Michelline Syjuco, and Leeroy New, all established in the fields of jewelry-making, sculpting, and designing. The pieces are a mix of jewels, bags, furniture, and for New’s case, a dress slash sculpture. Now that’s art you can wear. The exhibit will be on display, and available to be worn (if you have the guts to grab it) until Sept. 7 at the Yuchengco Museum at RCBC Plaza, Makati.
Who knew it would take a simple hug to gather everyone in one place for a night of music revelry? Tonight, VJJ Productions is holding its third Hands in Your Pants, a gig featuring the music of Pedicab, Taken By Cars, Maude, Brisom, Hansom, She’s Only Sixteen and Autotelic. Great musicians aside, attendees get the chance to win exclusive items from Doc Martens Philippines that you can’t get anywhere else. But the biggest draw is the hug you receive from either Veronica Feleo, Joey Santos, or Jeula Agbayani (you can only pick one!). Or perhaps it could be the name of the gig? Hands in Your Pants happens at Route 196, starting 8 p.m.
Find seafood sandwiches in Makati for Manila Pop Up
If you find yourself in Makati today, make sure to scout the area for the elusive Manila Pop Up, a one-day-only event that will literally pop out of nowhere to serve some delicious goodness. Today’s menu will highlight the bounties of the sea, with the best flathead lobsters, soft-shell crabs, oysters, shrimps, and caviar prepared by a mystery chef. To make the event a little more exciting, the organizers (which includes the dashing Erwan Heussaff) kept the location and the chef under wraps until Thursday, taking the pop-up concept very seriously. Since we want our readers to experience the best events, this Pop up will be at Brgr, at Jupiter cor. Planet Street, Makati. Words of advice: The pop-up will begin at 12:30 p.m. until supplies last. And they’re only making a few hundred burgers. Run.
