MANILA, Philippines - Pan de Sal Saves the Day, a Filipino children’s story by Norma Olizon-Chikiamco, is about a girl named Pan de Sal who feels embarrassed for looking plain, for living in a nipa hut, and for having simple food. She envies her rich and fancy classmates who go by the names Croissant, Muffin and Doughnut.
Pan de Sal shows her uniqueness one day when the school bus they are on gets a flat tire. She entertains her classmates and shares her simple lunch with them. It turns out that she has no reason to feel embarrassed after all!
Chikiamco’s story won first prize in the children’s story division of the Palanca Awards. The author will be present at the book launch next Saturday, Sept. 5, at Powerbooks SM Megamall. The first 60 attendees will get a free metal bookmark from Powerbooks, which will also raffle off 10 hardbound children’s books and 10 photography/residential interior books. Powercard Plus members will also get an additional five percent off for every purchase of Pan de Sal Saves the Day during the event
