Star, National Book Store, Globe announce 2008 winners

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine STAR, National Book Store, and Globe Telecom announce winners of My Favorite Book 2008, selected from the year’s weekly winners and published every Sunday in the Sunday Lifestyle pages.

The winners are:

Grand prize: Dinah Roma Sianturi, The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

Second prize: Clarissa Estuar, Shadowlands

Third prize: Jaime Dianzon, Istanbul: Memories and the City by Orhan Pamuk

The five honorable-mention winners are:

Michi Ferreol, 19 Minutes of Death Jodi Picoult

Agapito Tabao, Dekada 70 by Lualhati Bautista

Ma. Karla Abigail Pangilinan, The Stranger by Albert Camus

Salem Bacol, All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

Ma. Paula Luz Pamintuan-Riva, A Collection of Beautiesby Whitney Otto

The grand prize winner will receive P50,000 (half in cash, half in National Book Store gift certificates); second prize will get P30,000 (half in cash, half in NBS GCs); third prize will receive P20,000 (half in cash, half in NBS GCs); and the five honorable-mention winners will get P10,000 (cash from the STAR and GCs from NBS). All winners will also receive a Globe Handyphone each.

Awarding ceremonies will be on March 10, Tuesday, at 11:30 a.m. Winners will be notified of the venue of the event and are requested to e-mail Lifestyle assistant editor Tanya T. Lara at tanyalara@yahoo.com.
