SM presents Trajecitos de Bebe

MANILA, Philippines - A christening gown is a special garment worn by infants and small children during a Christian baptism or dedication ceremony. In a dominantly Catholic country like the Philippines, parents put much importance to their little one’s baptism. Considered a rite of passage, it is often a happy event attended by family members and friends. The good news is that SM now has Trajecitos de Bebe, a line of ready to wear baptismal clothes in its Infants Wear Department.

Infant christenings originated from the Jewish bins and zeved habat rituals, in which children are named and dedicated to God. The Christian church adopted similar custom, with children and adult converts wearing white clothing to symbolize their “newness of life” in Christ.

Up to the 17th century, young babies were wrapped in tight swaddling clothes carried to the font in a fearing cloth. The first Christening robes were made in the style of every day by 18th- century children — slip dresses with a very long flowing skirt falling from a short, tucked bodice, low neck, and short sleeves.

In the Victorian era, the typical Christening outfits were long white gowns with elaborate lace and embroidery. Bonnets, bibs, and booties completed the Christening ensemble, which were made from satin and silk until cotton became more accessible.

This fashion has remained popular for christenings ever since partly due to the tradition of handing these robes from one generation to another. Considered heirlooms, christening gowns embrace both the family’s past and future, and the garment may also include symbols specific to the family’s cultural background.

Trajecitos de Bebe brings this tradition to modern families with ready-to-wear baptismal gowns for newborns, as well as three and six month old babies. Delicately designed with pretty detailed trimmings and matching bonnets in pure silk and cotton, these will make baby very special on his or her Christening day.

The Trajecitos de Bebe collection is available at the Infant’s Wear Department of SM stores in Cubao, Makati, North EDSA, Ortigas, Fairview, Marikina, Manila, Southmall, San Lazaro, and the SM Mall of Asia. In the provincial areas, these are available in SM stores in Cebu, Iloilo, Pampanga, Clark, Batangas, Lipa, Naga, and Calamba.
